What to Know
Falls are a common cause of injury, especially for older adults and people recovering from illness or surgery. Small changes at home can make a big difference.
Make your home safer
- Clear walkways of clutter, cords, and loose rugs.
- Use night lights and keep stairways and hallways well lit.
- Consider grab bars in the bathroom and non-slip mats in the tub or shower.
- Keep things you use often within easy reach.
Everyday habits that help
- Wear supportive, non-slip shoes.
- Stand up slowly, especially after lying down or sitting for a while.
- Use your cane or walker as your therapist instructed.
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines that may cause dizziness, and have your vision checked regularly.
